National fisher-folk organisation launched
JAMAICA - A national fisher-folk organisation (NFO) was launched last Friday at the Cheddi Jagan Research Centre, Kingston. It aims to promote management of the sector to enhance sustainable utilisation of marine resources, the Government Information Agency (GINA) reported.

Unique diet developed for shrimps
INDIA - The Fisheries College and Research Institute (FCRI) at Tuticorin has developed a unique single cell diet that can be used as a cost-effective substitute for micro algae cultures for shrimp larvae reared in marine hatcheries.

Ecuador's shrimp duty win gives hope to exporters
INDIA - The US administration has decided to abolish the anti-dumping duty on shrimp imports from Ecuador, rejecting an appeal of the Southern Shrimp Alliance (SSA). The duty is also expected to be withdrawn by August 20.

Cabinet agrees €530m shellfish protection plan
IRELAND - The Cabinet has approved new protection measures for Irish shellfish waters which will involve spending €530m over the next 10 years.

HAWAII - Hawaiians used to cultivate clams in fishponds, but this tradition faded a long time ago. A young Molokai wahine is trying to revive this old subsistence practice by doing scientific research in one of the island’s fishponds.
