US - On January 7, 2007, President Bush lifted the prohibition on selling oil leases in Bristol Bay, Alaska. The Minerals Management Service (MMS) has proposed beginning lease sales in 2011, but opposition to the drilling plan is mounting.

Senate approves Wiggins' salmon restoration bill
US - During the Legislature’s special session meeting on water issues this week, the state Senate voted 26-10 to approve Senate Bill X2 5, a measure authored by Sen. Pat Wiggins (D–Santa Rosa) to secure nearly $5.3 million in state bond funds for salmon restoration.

Toxic pesticide again in use on salmon farms
UK - Salmon farmers are again using a toxic pesticide years after it was thought to have been phased out. The chemical, teflubenzuron, known commercially as Calicide, and is given to salmon to kill sea lice parasites.

TURKEY - The Fish Promotion Group has enhanced its promotional campaign after undergoing a restructuring process in which exporter unions, the fishery products federation and fishery unions took part.

Tilapia, a model fish for research and genome frequencing
GERMANY - Tilapia, a fish that originates from southern countries, has been introduced in over 100 countries. It is the second most commonly produced fish in aquaculture in the world after carp (99 per cent is produced and consumed in China).

  Netherlands

Cell Aquaculture buys Dutch barramundi facility
HOLLAND - Worldwide barramundi farming specialist Cell Aquaculture Limited (CAQ) has negotiated to buy out its joint venture partner to own 100 per cent of Cell Aquaculture Netherlands BV. The group advised the main asset is the Tolbert barramundi facility in Holland.

  Malta

Sustainable aquaculture – The importance of research
MALTA - The Food and Agriculture Organisation,states that aquaculture produces over 30 per cent of the fish consumed throughout the world; a percentage that is set to increase to more than 50 per cent by the year 2030. For this increase to take place, a lot of research and development is taking place in all branches of aquaculture and most topics that deal with aquaculture and requires more development, says Dr Francis Agius, Parliamentary Secretary for Agriculture and Fisheries.

UGANDA - About five million people in Uganda are malnourished, according to the agriculture ministry. Okaasi Opolot, the commissioner for production and marketing, said most of them live in the rural areas and should be encouraged to take on aquaculture.

Red tape blocks potential for Euro fish farming, says MEP
BRUSSELS - European fish farmers are losing out to international competition because red tape, bureaucracy and endless directives are pushing investors, production and buyers towards more lucrative markets in China, Japan and Vietnam.

Volume up – value down for Norwegian salmon exports
NORWAY - Exports of Norwegian salmon in September totalled 51,428 tonnes. This is 19% or 8,356 tonnes higher than in the same month the previous year. The value of exports of Norwegian salmon fell by NOK 32 million to NOK 1.4 billion, according to figures from the Norwegian Seafood Export Council.

TAIWAN - Aquaculture researchers from National Taiwan University (NTU) say that genetic analysis is yielding new insight into the workings of a virus that has devastated shrimp stocks in the nation since it was discovered in 1992.

White shrimp revival as farms established in Visayas
PHILIPPINES - The Department of Agriculture has established three accredited hatcheries in the Visayas to breed and produce the Peneaus vannamei or Pacific white shrimp as part of the agency's to revive the country's once-robust shrimp industry.

Make way for money-making catfish
PHILIPPINES - The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources will start to vigorously promote the Pangasius, a freshwater species of catfish, dubbed as the "next big thing" in the local aquaculture industry.
