Tilapia Market Report - January 2008
The US market of tilapia is growing, says the latest Globefish Report. Total imports for 2007 were estimated at 170 000 tonnes, and after allowing a conversation factor of 2.85 for tilapia fillets, this equates to about 400 000 tonnes. It makes the US the world’s second major market for tilapia after China.
Live Vaccine is Feasible for Strep. iniae Control
Jane Jordan, TheFishSite Editor, reports on a joint research project to develop control methods for Streptococcus iniae in fish. US Scientists with the Sea Grant programme, have demonstrated the feasibility of using a live-attenuated vaccine to prevent this deadly infection. The preliminary trials are part of a research and development project that embraces both pharmacology and genetic science.

US - The US catfish industry is pinning its hopes on a new, premium catfish fillet, that could increase consumer interest and help the struggling industry out of decline.

DuPont Pledges $1 Million to World Food Prize
US - DuPont has made a $1 million contingent donation to fund the establishment of a permanent home for the World Food Prize in Des Moines, Iowa. The donation will support the transformation of the former Des Moines Public Library into the Norman E. Borlaug Hall of Laureates and will be administered through DuPont business Pioneer Hi-Bred.
