Welcome to this week's newsletter
We have 4 new features this week:
Oyster Producers Lose a Generation
France's oyster industry is still reeling from a body blow to Europe's
oyster capital, the Marennes basin where the Ile d'Oleron faces the twin estuaries
of the rivers Seudre and Charente across a narrow tidal strait. This stretch of
water is one of the richest spawning grounds for oysters in France: for
centuries oyster larvae have been harvested here on simple poles planted in
the mudflats, before being collected and grown on, writes Peter Crosskey for TheFishSite.
Back from the Brink: Resuscitating Oysters in Chesapeake Bay
During the 19th century the Chesapeake oyster fishery on Maryland’s Eastern Shore was said to be the biggest in the world, but over the years the oyster population fell to one disaster after another. Today the population stands at an estimated one per cent of its former glory, but an innovative idea to introduce a non-native species to the waters may yet reverse the trend. Adam Anson, TheFishSite Reporter finds out how this momentous turnaround might be achieved.
