Welcome to this week's newsletter
We have 4 new features this week:
ISA: Beneath the Surface of Chile's Troubled Waters
In Chile's Roman numeral system of designated regions, it is known as Region XII. Here, amongst the penguins, ñandus, guanacos and condors, the world's second largest salmon industry is undergoing a crisis that seems set to devastate the region, both economically and culturally, writes Adam Anson, reporting for TheFishSite.
Welfare of Farmed Fish
Farmed fish are contained - in ponds, tanks or cages - as with all farmed animals. According to a report published by Consenus, just as in land-based farming, farm managers increasingly choose stocking densities and handling practices that optimize growth and health status while avoiding unnecessary suffering.
Opportunities to Meet the Rising Demand in Global Aquaculture
In order to provide the right environment for the sector to meet projected global demand for aquatic food, we must first identify the most compelling issues that require attention by the aquaculture sector. This paper, a product of the Food and Agriculture Organisation, Commitee on Fisheries attempts to examine the status of aquaculture production and develop a plan to help it move in the right direction
Russian Federation Fishery Products Update 2008
Russia's fishing industry is currently experiencing several serious challenges including an obsolete fleet, confusing regulations, lack of processing facilities, and dwindling fisheries, says a report prepared by Mary Ellen Smith, USDA Foreign Agricultural Service.
