The total value of fish sales received by trout growers in the United States totaled 79.7 million dollars for 2012, an increase of 6 percent from 2011. Idaho accounted for 55 percent of the total value of fish sold.
USDA Catfish Reports

The number of trout 12 inches and longer sold during 2012 totaled 40.4 million fish, up 6 percent from the previous year. The average price per pound was $1.52, unchanged from 2011. The value of sales for the 2012 marketing year was 72.7 million dollars, up 6 percent from 2011. For trout 12 inches or longer, 52 percent were sold to processors.

The number of 6"- 12" trout sold during 2012 totaled 6.78 million fish, an increase of 21 percent from 2011. The average price per pound was $2.87 during 2012, down 34 cents from the 2011 price. The total value of sales was 5.98 million dollars during 2012, a 3 percent decrease from the previous year. The major sales outlets for 6"-12" trout were for recreational stocking accounting for 51 percent of total sales, followed by wholesale to other producers with 24 percent.

The number of 1"- 6" trout sold during 2012 totaled 6.8 million, a 36 percent increase from the previous year. The average value per 1,000 fish was $162 during 2012, down from $207 in 2011. The total value of sales was 1.09 million dollars, up 6 percent from last year's total.

Distributed Trout

Trout distributed for restoration, conservation, and recreational purposes, primarily by State and Federal hatcheries, included 9.3 million 12" or longer fish, 62.3 million 6"- 12" fish, and 56.4 million 1"- 6" fish. The estimated value of fish distributed totaled 98.9 million dollars, down 2 percent from 2011.

Trout Losses

Total losses of all trout intended for sale were 22.7 million fish during 2012. Disease accounted for 81 percent of these losses.
